Your design approach is rooted in storytelling. How do you begin crafting a narrative for a space, and how does that process unfold?

I am usually inspired by one thing, it could be a film or a piece of furniture. For our Design on a Dime space this year, I was inspired by two leather chairs that reminded me of furniture one would find on a yacht. From there, the underwater theme evolved.

You've been recognized as the “go-to designer for color consulting.” What role do you feel that color plays in evoking emotion and personal style in a home?

Colors are a way for people to express themselves. Bold colors can tell the story of who you are or who you want to be. It's a way of letting others know that you're brave, you're hip, or you're confident. Soft colors do the same, they can be calming, serene, and relaxing.

For this year’s Design on a Dime, you have included SFERRA linens in the room you designed. What do you like best about SFERRA’s linens and why have you selected them for this project?

I use SFERRA bedding in my own home so I have a lot of experience with the brand. I love the vast offering of base fabrics, embroideries, colors and the extensive collection of jacquards from SFERRA. My favorite thing is that it's so easy to care for; you don't really need to iron their sheets unless you want to since they come out of the dryer looking like new.

What is one small but impactful design detail that can instantly elevate a bedroom?

An important item in a bedroom is a great duvet cover. This choice can enhance all of the other elements in the room and it's one of the easiest things to update.

Where do you find inspiration outside of the world of interiors—fashion, travel, art?

I'm obsessed with fashion, it's really my first love and my hobby. It's a constant source of inspiration to me. I watch all the major shows and I subscribe to the trade sites so I'm one of the first to know who's wearing what.

How has your design perspective evolved over the years?

My aesthetic has remained the same. I'm still very easy and relaxed in the way I design spaces, but my abilities and experience have evolved. I have more resources available to me and more exposure to life which I think makes me a better designer today.
