Renowned for a highly versatile and eclectic aesthetic, Robert Stilin is known for combining the vintage and classic with the ultra-modern. His journey as an interior designer spans over 25 years, and he has been recognized as one of the 100 Top Designers by Architectural Digest, among other honors. We sat with Stilin to discuss his first book release—Robert Stilin: Interiors.

How did the idea of the new book come about, and how did you curate the featured homes?

It is a designer's dream—and a lifelong goal—to have enough material to publish your own book. I wanted it to reflect the depth and range of my work, and began by opening with my apartment in NYC and ending with my home in the Hamptons.

Art is clearly an important element in your design. How do you balance art with color and unique pieces for the home, and what advice do you have for someone just starting to build his/her art collection?

It's about balancing all aspects of the project. I don't think you want one element in any interior to overpower another. No matter what, everything must be comfortable—fabrics have to feel good on the skin, and you must pair comfort with function and chic design.

My advice on building an art collection is to go out and look at museums, galleries, art fairs—and take note of what speaks to you. Buy what you love, and remember, there is no rush. It should be a journey and a fun part of your life.

SFERRA is prominently featured throughout your book and in your home, what do you love about our linens, and what do you look for in fine linens?

I like linens that are aesthetically clean and of the highest quality. SFERRA offers linens that are high-quality and match my taste. They are consistent, reliable, and get better with age.

What inspired you to become an interior designer, and who are some of your mentors?

I always had a natural affinity for aesthetics and details of the home. When I first had the opportunity to design my own house, I really enjoyed the process and knew I could do this as a business. Those I have always respected in the design world are Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Jacques Grange, Axel Vervoordt, Michael Taylor, Rose Tarlow.
